Red Florals: How to Style a Red Floral Dress for Fall and the Holidays
One rich red print, three cozy pieces, and an outfit that carries you from leaf-peeping to the holiday table.
If I could only keep one color through the colder months, it would be red. Not fire-engine red, but that deep, warm, cranberry-and-wine kind of red that looks like it belongs next to a candle and a cup of cider. This year my go-to is a flowy red floral maxi dress with long sleeves and a soft tiered skirt, and I have already worn it more times than I want to admit.
Soften it with a cozy neutral
A bold red print can feel like a lot on its own, so I calm it down with a creamy long open-front cardigan in apricot. The warm beige picks up the lighter petals in the print and makes the whole look feel relaxed instead of fancy. Leave it open, push the sleeves up, and let the dress do the talking.
Ground it with warm boots
Here is where the outfit turns into fall. Tan knee-high block-heel boots peek out under the hem and add that cozy, a-little-bit-western warmth. The block heel is easy to walk in all day, and the tan keeps everything soft rather than harsh like black would.
Finish with a little gold
Red and gold just belong together, especially around the holidays. A pair of simple gold hoop earrings is all you need. Pull your hair back so they show, add a warm berry lip, and you are done in five minutes.
Where I'd wear it
- Thanksgiving dinner: the full look with the cardigan, because the dress is comfy enough for second helpings.
- Church or a family brunch: cardigan buttoned halfway, boots, and hoops.
- Holiday party: drop the cardigan, add a faux-fur wrap or a velvet blazer, and swap the boots for a heel.
Little tips from me
Pick one accent color straight from the print and repeat it once, maybe in your bag or your lipstick. Keep everything else neutral and warm (cream, camel, tan, gold) so the red stays the star. And if the maxi length feels like a lot, a thin belt at the waist instantly shapes it.
